Why MEC?
When I was a student in middle and high school, I would sometimes get bored. Sometimes the learning process was not engaging. At times, it seemed like a one size fits all approach to learning. Learning at that time did not captivate me or make me motivated.
Over time, I started to focus on study habits and how to personally engage in the study process. That intrigued me. As I learned study habits, my motivation strengthened along with achieving grade improvement. Another game changer for me was a learning environment full of teachers who did not give up on me. One particular teacher was a major encourager in my life. She opened my eyes to opportunities and life goals I had not imagined at that time. This teacher grasped my talent in history and ignited a fire in me to study and become a history teacher.
When I became an educator, I quickly learned that so much of teaching and learning focused on reading and math literacy. My passion was to create a class that focused on how to learn and study and not just the topics themselves. Since 2001, I have been teaching and educating students about study skills in the greater DC metropolitan area. During that time over 2,500 students have taken my S.O.S and Summer S.L.A.M. (Students Learning to Achieve More) classes.
Education is a passport to a promising future. Tomorrow belongs to those that prepare for it today. If school is considering boring and unengaging to students, find new ways to learn, study and engage in the educational process. Develop innovative ways to grasp and process new information. If you are already working hard, then start working smart. Learn how to learn effectively.
